1Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness. | An eye catching opening. This is quite what I need right now.
2Why do the nations say, “Where is their God?” 3Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him. 4But their idols are silver and gold, made by the hands of men. 5They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but they cannot see; 6they have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but they cannot smell; 7they have hands, but cannot feel, feet, but they cannot walk; nor can they utter a sound with their throats. 8Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them. | Verse 2 still strikes at me. I see this everywhere, especially on 9gag. The answer is right there on verse 3. Verse 4 to verse 8 is true, but not as much as it was before. Idolatry today is mostly in the form of abstract things such as money, fame and glory.
9O house of Israel, trust in the Lord— he is their help and shield. 10O house of Aaron, trust in the Lord— he is their help and shield. 11You who fear him, trust in the Lord— he is their help and shield. 12The Lord remembers us and will bless us: He will bless the house of Israel, he will bless the house of Aaron, 13he will bless those who fear the Lord— small and great alike. 14May the Lord make you increase, both you and your children. 15May you be blessed by the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. | The psalmist mentions three groups: the house of Israel, the house of Aaron, and those who fear the Lord. I do not know the meaning of the two groups, but I am pretty sure that I belong to the third one. | God is my help and shield and He will remember and bless me.
16The highest heavens belong to the Lord, but the earth he has given to man. 17It is not the dead who praise the Lord, those who go down to silence; 18it is we who extol the Lord, both now and forevermore. Praise the Lord.a Footnotes: a 18 Hebrew Hallelu Yah | Verse 16 is quite interesting: This fits what my Geog 1 class says about Judeo-Christian view on nature. Verse 17 is more interesting, however, for it may imply that after death is mere silence. Yet it is quite contradictory to verse 18, where it says we will "extol the Lord both now and forevermore." | A quick solution to this is that the death spoken of here is not physical, but spiritual. This link discusses more deeply about this topic |
Feel free to correct me if there is anything wrong in my understanding of the Bible. I am not a Bible scholar or anything, I'm just studying the Word of God.
