02/24/12: Psalm 113

Psalm 113
This psalm is an acrostic poem, the lines of which begin with the successive letters of the Hebrew alphabet.

Verse Observation Interpretation Application
1Praise the Lord.a

Praise, O servants of the Lord,
praise the name of the Lord.
2Let the name of the Lord be praised,
both now and forevermore.
3From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets,
the name of the Lord is to be praised.

4The Lord is exalted over all the nations,
his glory above the heavens.
5Who is like the Lord our God,
the One who sits enthroned on high,
6who stoops down to look
on the heavens and the earth?

7He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the ash heap;
8he seats them with princes,
with the princes of their people.
9He settles the barren woman in her home
as a happy mother of children.

Praise the Lord.

Footnotes:
a 1 Hebrew Hallelu Yah; also in verse 9
This psalm starts and ends with the same phrase as that of the two previous psalms. v. 2 says that in all time and in all places we should praise the Lord. v. 5 says that God "stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth." However, v.7-9 is a bit unsettling, because it seems to promise that poor people will be lifted and barren women will be mothers. Surely this is not what is happening right now.

Feel free to correct me if there is anything wrong in my understanding of the Bible. I am not a Bible scholar or anything, I'm just studying the Word of God.
